The Story of Holi Celebration

Krittika Dwivedi

Holi is a very famous festival of our country. It is a festival of colours. There are many stories behind this festival. I am writing one of those stories.

There was a powerful demon-king. His name was Hiranyakashyapu. He ordered everyone to worship him as God. Everyone obeyed his order. His son did not obey his order. His son’s name was Prahlad. Prahlad was devotee of Lord Vishnu. Hiranyakashyapu became angry with his son. He tried to stop Prahlad in many ways from worship of Lord Vishnu. Prahlad again and again disobeyed his father. In the last, Hiranyakashyapu decided to kill Prahlad. Hiranyakashyapu asked his sister Holika to kill Prahlad. Holika had a special boon of not burning in fire. Holika sat in the fire with Prahlad. Holika died in the fire and Prahlad came safe from there.

Today, Hindus light bonfires on the day of Holi to celebrate the triumph of Good over Evil.
