Quality Policy of Tata Steel
Ghanshyam Shukla
Quality is not a buzzword; it is a culture that grows gradually with realization to be good able to perform for the larger good. With an active involvement at Tata Steel, and seeing Quality considerations in thought and behavior of everyone is being disseminated in this article .
Tata Steel dedicates itself to total Quality, it’s Quality Policy (QP) states that
“We shall constantly strive to be the Supplier of World class Goods And Services by anticipating and exceeding the expectations of all our Customers.
Continuous improvement, Teamwork, Commitment and credibility shall be our Guiding values.”
Like this Corporate I suggest that each one of us should have our own Quality Policy. In the above QP keywords are :
Continuous Improvement- means we have to do better and better day by day by competing with ourselves and not looking to others.
Team Work - means One & One Makes Eleven. So whether it be your home or class or anywhere, it is better to work as a team.
Commitment- means we have to set a deadline or target or goal. It is a confession to ourselves to complete a task within a decided timeframe.
Credibility: means We have to do what we speak.
A small tip for students to grow into a quality culture is suggested. Whenever you get some pocket money from your parents. First purchase a chitpad (Pocket Diary) if not available. Then whenever you spend, immediately write it in the chitpad. At the end of the day you can see what is the necessary and what is the unnecessary expenditure made by you.
Be Like A Soldier, Think Big: I have done some studies towards beautification of our cities. The idea could be applied everywhere in the country. Some of the observations are as under -
1) All the Plantations must be done in a line along the Roads. They must be Equidistant both the sides of the roads. While plantation, care must be taken that they have to be supported with Bamboos, so that the stem grows vertically and symmetrically. These plants should be cared similar to that a Mother taking care of her child.
2) The Sign Boards must be in Plumb, Water Level and the Height must be made Statutory.
3) Slanting Poles and Trees must be slowly replaced, otherwise in case of storm some serious accident may occur.
4) The boards of shopping places and complexes must be in water level and of the same colour.
5) The Edges of the roads must be in line and the burms must be filled with proper moorum to maintain the level of the road. This will avoid Accidents.
Such efforts require no additional investment. All that it needs is care to derive a sense of pride in doing a good work which entails a similar feeling in every person passing by.
Railways is huge system that connects the whole of India. It’s multidimensionality encompasses right from construction, operation, maintenance, engineering, technology, commerce, ecology upto safety, health, hygiene and welfare. Name an area of expertise and it has is an important place in the railways. A study towards improvements was carried out in 2013 in Bhopal Division of Railways and was given to the DRM Mr Rajeev Choudhary .Some recommendations are -
1) There must be a Doctor in all the Stations.
2) There must be a Doctor in all the Trains
3) Every bogie must be well connected with Doctor, the GRPF, the Guard Through Intercom.
4) Bench Marked Food Must be available in all outlets at stations; Tea/Coffee must be having proper ratio of its contents.
5) Branded Sanchi/ Amul Parlour must be there to avoid any possibility of adulteration.
6) Mass Plantation work could be done alongside the Railway Track & in the Railway Land. It is Important that care to be taken to give a support to the Baby Plants. Similar to that suggested in cities plantation must be done equidistantly and Symmetrically. I have an Idea to implement such reforms - Why not to create a Philosophy similar to to the film NAYA DAUR to convey Shramdaan philosophy and how it can benefit all. Such initiatives would add adventure and a picnic like break away from monotony in life. At least we could make a Model on Bhopal to Mandideep railway track.
7) Cleanliness of stations is an important aspect. Fix Up a Sensor at the inlet and Exit of Stations. As the ENGINE senses it the TOILET PANS waste gets diverted into the Sump. After the passing off of the Guard’s Bogie the sensor the outlet of sump is automatically evacuates the sewage in subsequent processing system.
8) It is noted that the Protection Forces are working for more than 12 Hrs sometimes 24 Hrs. There has to be some Time Limit. Sleep/ Rest is also necessary for them to help them to perform proficiently and take care of family. This will help to create a good balance between performance on duty and in family.
9) Something must be done during the slack season during which the AC Compartments are empty. The Rates may be so regulated that trains tend to run at their full capacity. It is win-win situation for railways and passengers
10) Food must be Available for the diabetic patients also.
11) Diesel Engine once started is only switched off when it goes to the LOCOSHED. To be Studied. From perspective of optimization of fuel consumption
12) The Pre-Stressed Concrete Sleepers could be replaced with some Tough Fibrous Pre-Stressed Sleepers. This will cut the cost heavily, a Value Engineering consideration.
13) Use of pure limestone for marking and identification could be replaced with sub-graded limestone available in the Cement Plants as an affluent.
14) There has to be some fast action towards construction of ROB (Road Over Bridge) and RUB (Road Under Bridge) to reduce the fuel and time consumption at the Barriers.
15) Malls could be constructed at the big stations; it will add to earnings to the railways and comfort to passengers.
16) Instrumental music can be set in the bogies even in the general compartments so that the travelers enjoy their journey like a picnic.
17) Stations must be neat and tidy.
18) Rails must have sensors so that any mischievous activity can be noticed at the substation.
19) Tourist places must be announced at the Stations.
20) Coach numbers must be displayed at the entrance 20 minutes before the train arrival.
21) Educational channels should be installed in the chair-cars.
22) Proper ergonomic study must be done in the Toilets.
23) Mobile charging points must be ready to use. Can there be a WiFi system in the trains.
24) There is too much problem of rats in the bogies, it needs a remedy.
25) Taps of the railways must be sensor operated. It will help to optimize use of water and thereby manage problem of water availability in running trains.
26) Beggars clean the compartments using their shirts. CCTV system in coaches would help to fix negligent cleaning staff as well as security of passengers and railway property.
27) Number of general compartments must be increased. Military Compartment should be specified.
28) Some Institute must be created for the skill development of beggars. It will help them integrate into perennial functions of railway system as well as infuse Self-esteem in them .
29) Doors in coaches must lock properly.
30) Windows in coaches must shut horizontally instead of vertically to avoid accidents and effectiveness of it being Shut properly.
31) All coaches must be equipped with solar panels.
32) In coaches all thread screws must be replaced with countersunk screws. This will avoid any passenger getting hurt
33) There must be a digital clock in all the coaches displaying ambient temperature.
The task of quality improvement in railways is huge yet beginning is required with concern and commitment.
Conclusion: Every river starts with a thin stream. So is the importance of first step with a realization for quality as an essential part of life. It would automatically reverberate and become infectious. The basic essence of Quality is that everyone wants best of everything he encounters. But, unless we as an individual become conscious of Quality and walk-the- talk we cannot get it.
